Jinja found in Jinja District, Busoga sub-region in Eastern Uganda. It is also a city of its own and an industrial town, lying along the North shores of Lake Victoria. The distance between Jinja and Kampala is about 81 km. Jinja is most popular as adrenaline adventure capital of East Africa, and it being the source of the Nile River.

The Nile River starts its journey from Lake Victoria in Jinja and flows 6650 km to Egypt. Jinja is named after the huge rocks that exist at the Nile River and these were covered in water after Owen Falls dam construction in 1956. Basoga are the Bantu speaking group and the dominant tribe in Jinja.

History

Jinja is one of the towns that the British settlers founded. It was established in 1901 and its plan was made in 1948 during the colonial era. The town’s plan was made by Ernst May, German architect and urban planner. Besides Jinja, Ernst also made Kampala capital city’s plan creating what he described as neighborhood units.

Jinja is a tourist destination of its own, providing exhilarating experiences to adventure seekers on Uganda safari. As an industrial town, there are several industries that have been established in the area including Kakira Sugar Works, sugar –making company run by the Madhivani group of companies; Nytil textile, Nile Breweries Ltd and Kiira Motors.

Jet boating

Jet boating is a rewarding adventure conducted on the Source of the Nile. Take off at the speed of 100 km per hour through the rapids and tides. It is a fun-filling adrenaline adventure and takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Quad biking

There are few places worth visiting for quad biking and Jinja is of them. The amazing bit about quad biking in Jinja is that you will be enjoying the view of the Nile River or ride through the villages, sugarcane plantations, forests and many others.

Horseback riding

Visit the Mahatma Gandhi monument

The monument of Mahatma Gandhi was set up in memory of Mahatma. He is remembered for his tireless work to liberate India and also started journey to modernization. His actions were also felt in Africa and prior to his death; he wished his ashes were poured on the mighty Source of the Nile. A statue was also built near the Source of Nile River.

Tubing

Tubing is a unique experience offered on the Nile River involving you floating on the water. This is done in a safe area using air-pressured tubes.
